You Need More Experience......

Oh, that position looks like it would be good; I think I will apply for it. Okay I have the application filled out, my resume is attached, alright additional questions……Do you have at least three years experience………Do you have at least five years experience…….Do you have at least two years experience. Submit…..you do not meet the minimum qualifications, try a different position. Let me get this straight, in high school they tell you to go to college so you can get a better job but, when you get out of college the better jobs want experience. Something does not add up, can someone please explain this to me. So the military wants members to come in out of high school and they train them not only in the classroom but also on the job and it is the best military in the world. It seems to me that businesses no matter what kind could hire recruit just like the military only they can get people out of college. Not only should they be “smarter” if that is the case but, also have excellent social skills, all they have to do is train them the way they want them to be trained. Seems simple to me but, that is not the case. It seems that the majority of jobs want experience and not only experience but, specific experience. I do not feel like a six month internship would be enough either. Another question, how do I get experience if I cannot get a job? Make sense? I did not think so either; it seems to me that the younger generation is getting screwed. We are buying into the college thing and what do we get in return? We get debt that will take our lifetime to pay down and the same job that we would get if we did not even have degrees. Now you have to think is this, “you need more experience” a filtering technique by businesses so that they can hire people they know, a friend’s kid, a relative, someone from church’s kid, or maybe a kid that was in the same fraternity as they had been. Maybe it is just me….I cannot seem to find a quality job that I not only like but, get paid well too. I hate to think it is only me considering the millions that are in college right now and the thousands upon thousands that are graduating every December or May even in the summer. Even in the career of acting you need experience before receiving representation from an agent. Maybe the directors and producers need to see experience because they have worked with too many people that claim to be professional actors. Incidentally these unprofessional people fail miserably and take any chance that a new actor might have getting offered an audition. Now it seems to me that demanding experience might reduce the pool of talent and only give the opportunity to those that have less talent but more experience.
Now, as an example I offer the movie Cocktail featuring Tom Cruise, Bryan Brown and Elisabeth Shue, director Roger Donaldson. It starts off as Bryan Flanagan (Tom Cruise’s character) is riding in a car with his army buddies chasing down a greyhound bus so he can catch a ride home. As he arrives home he goes to his uncle’s bar and as they visit Bryan speaks of looking for a job the next day. As the next scene progresses, we see Bryan going in interview after interview and the reoccurring theme is that Bryan “needs more experience”. After being shot down time and time again he goes into a bar and gets a job as a bartender. He is enrolled in classes but, later in the movie he realizes he has potential elsewhere.
Long story short Bryan is a fancy, bottle flinging bartender with lots of flare, the movie has a love story, a tragedy and a happy ending, it ends with Bryan Flanagan opening his own bar Cocktails and Dreams written out with neon lights. It is one of my favorites, though Tom Cruise is not currently acting as well as he was back in the day. As you see in my example we have a movie showing the crap that happens when looking for a job. This movie was made in 1988 but, the problem is still prevalent all over the country.
As you have been reading this, you may have been agreeing with me or maybe you feel like I am a pessimistic and negative person. This I must tell you is completely false, I am anything but, negative. I do however know what I like and what I dislike and I do not like to be in a place that I do not enjoy. I like to call it as I see it, as it is my opinion and I hate to see myself as well as anyone else not being allowed the same opportunity that is being afforded to some. Maybe someday these injustices will be fixed and that we will all have the same opportunity, and may our talent be allowed to shine. I hope that you enjoyed reading and that maybe you were able to be relieved of some frustration that you may have had from similar distractions. I welcome your feedback and comments so I can improve my writing and develop better skills. Thank you and have a lovely day!

First Thing's First.....

Hello, so as the title suggest first things first. As many of you know, there are firsts in about everything that you do. First birthday, first steps, first grade, first dog, first love, first kiss, first heartbreak, first job and first child, these are just a few of firsts but, firsts none the less. This blog is not about all the other firsts, this is about my first blog. Honestly, I never thought I would write a blog or do anything like it but, here I am. I am writing it because I have been reading my best mate Ahdom Smith’s blogs and I have really enjoyed them. He suggested that I try it myself, writing about my experiences and travels. We have been on several trips together but, have not been on any in the past couple of years. Last summer I traveled to Lima, Peru with three friends from college for a mission trip and I plan on writing about it in the future. Depending on how well this goes, will determine my career as a blogger. I want you to know that I am glad you are here. I know that you are not here specifically with me but, you are here reading my blog. It is a real privilege that you are taking time out of your day to read something that I wrote. In saying that, I know that you either know me or you don’t, if we have never met, I am Adam Whitefield. I have twenty six years old, the youngest of three children and I have been married for two and half months to the woman of my dreams who happens to be the most incredible woman I know. I have a degree in Sociology and have a job that I do not care about. I look forward to you getting to know me through my writings. I may not get to know you or you may not get to know me as a close friend would but, you will get an idea of who I am through my blogs and stories. As I write I am sure you begin the process of getting to know me through my writings of my opinions, my wife, my life, my travels, and my experiences. I welcome your feedback and comments so I can improve my writing and develop better skills. Thank you and have a lovely day!
